Free & Discounted Entry at Topkapi Palace: Who Qualifies?
Children under 6 enter free with a valid passport. Students aged 7–25 pay a discounted rate with a valid student ID. Turkish and TRNC citizens under 18 enter free; those aged 18–25 pay a discounted rate. Groups of 20 or more receive a 10% discount. No general free entry days exist for international visitors.
Topkapi Palace has a clear set of free and discounted entry policies, but they are not always well communicated to international visitors. Understanding who qualifies before you arrive — and what documents you need to bring — avoids unwelcome surprises at the gate.
Free Entry
Children Under 6 — Free Entry (All Nationalities)
Children aged 5 and under enter Topkapi Palace free of charge, regardless of nationality. A valid passport must be presented at the gate for all children claiming free entry — without a passport, the standard adult ticket price applies. Do not assume that a verbal statement of the child’s age will be accepted. The passport check is consistently enforced.
Turkish Citizens Under 18 — Free Entry
Turkish citizens aged 17 and under enter free. A valid Turkish ID (T.C. Kimlik Kartı) or passport must be presented at the gate.
TRNC Citizens Under 18 — Free Entry
Citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus aged 17 and under also enter free. A valid TRNC ID or passport required.
Certain Professional Categories
Turkish Ministry of Culture card holders, press card holders, and certain professional categories (art historians, archaeologists, museum professionals) may be eligible for free or discounted entry. If you hold a relevant professional card, present it at the gate — eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis.
Discounted Entry
Students Aged 7–25 (International)
International students aged 7–25 receive a discounted ticket. A valid international student ID must be presented at the gate. The most widely accepted student identification for this discount is an ISIC card (International Student Identity Card), though other valid institutional student cards are generally accepted. The discount rate is set by the Ministry — confirm the current discounted price at the gate or on the official palace website.
Important note for foreign students aged 12–25: Foreign students in this age range pay twice the standard discounted rate — meaning the discount is less significant than for younger students or Turkish students. Confirm the current pricing structure when you arrive.
Turkish and TRNC Citizens Aged 18–25
Turkish and TRNC citizens aged 18–25 receive a discounted rate. A valid national ID or passport required.
Groups of 20 or More
Tour operators and groups bringing 20 or more visitors receive a 10% discount on the standard gate ticket price. This discount applies to group bookings made through authorised channels. Individual visitors joining together at the gate to form a group of 20 are not eligible — the discount is for organised groups booked in advance.
What Is Not Discounted
The Harem is included in the standard combined ticket (since January 2024) and follows the same pricing as the main palace entry — discounts that apply to the main ticket apply to the combined ticket.
Hagia Irene has its own separate pricing and is not included in any discount scheme for the main palace ticket.
Audio guide is a separate cost if purchased at the gate and is not covered by free or discounted entry — it must be purchased additionally. The most cost-effective way to include an audio guide is to buy an online skip-the-line ticket that includes it. See our audio guide review for options.

Are There Free Entry Days?
There are no general free entry days at Topkapi Palace for international visitors. Unlike some European museums that offer free admission on the first Sunday of the month or on specific public holidays, Topkapi Palace charges admission every day it is open.
The palace is closed on Tuesdays — which is not a free day, but simply a closure. See our opening hours guide for the full closure calendar.
Practical Tips
Bring documents for children, always. The under-6 free entry policy is consistently enforced with passport verification. Even if your child is clearly very young, staff at the gate will ask for a passport. Make sure it is in your bag before you leave your accommodation.
Online tickets for discounted visitors. If you are buying online and qualify for a discounted rate, most online platforms offer adult, student, and child pricing options at checkout. Select the correct category and have your qualifying document ready for presentation at the gate or to the host at the meeting point.
Group bookings. If you are organising a group of 20 or more, contact an authorised tour operator or the palace directly rather than attempting to claim the group discount at the gate. The discount is for pre-organised groups, not ad-hoc assemblies.
