Basilica Cistern + Topkapi Palace Combo Ticket

Basilica Cistern columns reflected in water and Topkapi Palace courtyard

This combo covers skip-the-line entry to both Topkapi Palace (with Harem) and the Basilica Cistern — two of Istanbul’s most visited sites, located 5 minutes apart on foot. An excellent same-day pairing that contrasts above-ground Ottoman grandeur with underground Byzantine atmosphere.

The Topkapi Palace and Basilica Cistern combo is one of the most naturally complementary pairings in Istanbul. Both are extraordinary, historically rich sites; they are 5 minutes apart on foot; and they offer entirely contrasting sensory experiences — one open, elevated, and sun-drenched, the other subterranean, dimly lit, and acoustically unique. Visiting both on the same day with a single combo ticket is the most efficient approach.

The Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) is a 6th-century Byzantine underground water reservoir, built under Emperor Justinian I in 532 AD to supply the Great Palace of Constantinople. It is supported by 336 marble columns in twelve rows of 28, covering an area the size of a football pitch, and still contains a shallow layer of water. At the far end, two of the columns rest on upturned Medusa heads — carved blocks of unknown origin that are among the most photographed objects in Istanbul.

The cistern underwent significant renovation in 2022, adding new lighting, a sound installation, and improved visitor pathways. The atmosphere is distinctive: cool, dimly lit, with the sound of water and the reflection of columns in the shallow floor creating an experience unlike anything above ground. Allow 45–60 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this ticket include the Harem?

Yes. Harem access at Topkapi is included.

How far is the Basilica Cistern from Topkapi Palace?

5 minutes on foot — exit the Imperial Gate, walk south past Hagia Sophia, and continue west along Yerebatan Caddesi.

Should I visit Topkapi or the Cistern first?

Visit Topkapi first (it opens at 09:00 and is best experienced early in the day) and the Cistern after — it is well-lit artificially and the time of day does not affect the experience.
