Topkapi Palace Opening Hours
Topkapi Palace is open daily except Tuesdays. Summer hours (April–October): 09:00–18:30, last entry 17:30. Winter hours (November–March): 09:00–17:30, last entry 16:30. The palace is also closed on the first day of Ramadan Bayram and the first day of Kurban Bayramı.
Knowing the opening hours of Topkapi Palace before you arrive is more important than it sounds. The ticket office closes 30 minutes before the palace does, the security queue can take up to 40 minutes at peak times, and certain galleries close earlier than the palace itself. Getting your timing wrong can mean missing the Harem, the Treasury, or simply not having enough time to see everything you came for.
This guide covers everything: summer and winter schedules, the exact days the palace is closed, ticket office closing times, and the best window of the day to arrive.
Topkapi Palace Opening Hours at a Glance
| Season | Palace Opens | Last Entry | Palace Closes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer (April–October) | 09:00 | 17:30 | 18:30 |
| Winter (November–March) | 09:00 | 16:30 | 17:30 |
The ticket office closes 30 minutes before last entry — at 17:00 in summer and 16:00 in winter. If you are buying tickets at the gate, factor this in. If you have a pre-booked skip-the-line ticket, you must still clear security before last entry time.
Summer Opening Hours (April to October)
Summer hours: Open 09:00 to 18:30. Last entry at 17:30. Ticket office closes at 17:00. These hours apply from approximately 1 April to 31 October each year, though the exact switchover date can vary slightly — always check before visiting in late March or early November.
The summer season is the busiest period at Topkapi Palace, particularly from June through August when visitor numbers peak. Arriving at opening time — 09:00 — gives you a meaningful head start before the main crowd arrives around 10:30–11:00. The palace does not limit the total number of daily visitors, so there is no risk of selling out, but the experience inside is noticeably more comfortable earlier in the day.
The extended summer closing time of 18:30 also gives you the option of a late afternoon visit after 16:00, when crowds thin considerably as tour groups depart and day visitors wrap up. This is one of the best-kept secrets for beating the Istanbul tourist rush — the light on the Bosphorus from the Fourth Courtyard terraces in the late afternoon is also exceptional. See our best time to visit guide for a full breakdown by time of day and season.
Winter Opening Hours (November to March)
Winter hours: Open 09:00 to 17:30. Last entry at 16:30. Ticket office closes at 16:00. Winter hours apply from approximately 1 November to 31 March.
Winter at Topkapi Palace is a significantly quieter experience. Visitor numbers drop sharply from November onwards, queues at the gate are much shorter, and you can move through the courtyards and galleries at your own pace without the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds of summer. The tradeoff is a shorter visiting window — last entry at 16:30 means a winter visit needs to start by 13:00 at the latest to have adequate time for the Harem, Treasury, and Sacred Relics Room.
Istanbul winters are mild by European standards — temperatures typically range from 5°C to 12°C — but the palace grounds involve substantial outdoor walking between courtyards, so dress in warm layers. The Harem and indoor gallery sections provide shelter, but the journey between them is entirely outdoors.
What Day Is Topkapi Palace Closed?
Closed every Tuesday. Topkapi Palace is also closed on the first day of Ramadan Bayram (Eid al-Fitr) and the first day of Kurban Bayramı (Eid al-Adha). It is open on all other Turkish public holidays.
Tuesday closure is the single most important thing to check before planning your visit. The palace has been closed on Tuesdays for decades and shows no sign of changing. If your Istanbul itinerary falls on a Tuesday, plan to visit nearby attractions instead — Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar are all within walking distance and are open on Tuesdays.
Ramadan Bayram (Eid al-Fitr) and Kurban Bayramı (Eid al-Adha) are the only additional full closure days. Only the first day of each holiday triggers the closure — the palace reopens on the second day of both festivals. The dates of these holidays shift each year according to the Islamic lunar calendar, so if you are visiting around the expected period (check current-year dates before booking), verify in advance.
All other Turkish public holidays — Republic Day (29 October), Victory Day (30 August), National Sovereignty Day (23 April), and others — do not cause closure. The palace is open as normal on these days, though they can be busier than usual due to domestic tourism.
Ticket Office Closing Times
This is where many visitors run into trouble. The ticket office at the Imperial Gate closes 30 minutes before last entry — not at last entry time itself:
- Summer: Ticket office closes at 17:00 (last entry 17:30, palace closes 18:30)
- Winter: Ticket office closes at 16:00 (last entry 16:30, palace closes 17:30)
If you are buying your ticket at the gate, you must arrive before these times. If you have a pre-booked online ticket, you still need to clear security before 17:30 (summer) or 16:30 (winter). The security queue alone can take 20–40 minutes during busy periods — factor this into your arrival plan.
Booking a skip-the-line ticket with a timed entry slot eliminates the ticket office queue entirely and gives you a guaranteed entry window regardless of the gate crowd. This is strongly recommended from April to October.
How Long Do You Need?
Minimum visit: 2 hours for the main courtyards. Recommended: 3–4 hours including the Harem and Treasury. Thorough visit: 4–5 hours to cover all collections and take your time.
The palace is much larger than most visitors expect, and the non-linear courtyard layout means you cannot rush efficiently between sections. If you are arriving after 15:00 in summer or after 14:00 in winter, be realistic about how much you can cover. For a full itinerary by time available, see our guide on how long to spend at Topkapi Palace.
Night Tours — Saturday Evening Sessions
Night tour hours: Saturdays only, 21:00–23:00. Maximum 300 visitors. Reservation by phone only: +90 (212) 236 9000 ext. 3761.
Topkapi Palace offers limited Saturday evening tours outside of regular opening hours, giving a small group of visitors the extraordinary experience of the palace after dark. These sessions are capacity-controlled (maximum 300 visitors per evening) and must be booked in advance by phone — online booking is not available. For everything you need to know about the night tour, see our dedicated night tour guide.
Practical Timing Tips
Arrive at opening: Reaching the Imperial Gate at 09:00 sharp — or ideally 15 minutes before — gives you the clearest run through the palace before the first wave of tour groups arrives around 10:30. Queue time at security is typically under 10 minutes at this hour even in summer.
Avoid midday in summer: The period from 11:00 to 15:00 in July and August is when the palace is at its most crowded. Courtyards, the Harem corridor, and the Treasury entrance all see significant bottlenecks during this window.
Late afternoon is underrated: Arriving after 16:00 in summer gives you 90 minutes inside with noticeably fewer visitors. This is enough time for a focused visit to the Treasury and Bosphorus terrace views, though not for a thorough exploration.
Check the calendar in advance: If your visit falls near a Tuesday or a religious holiday, build a backup plan. Use the time to visit the Basilica Cistern, Hagia Sophia, or the Blue Mosque — all within a 10-minute walk of Topkapi.
Download your audio guide before you arrive: There is no Wi-Fi inside the palace, and mobile reception is unreliable inside the thick-walled galleries. If you have booked a ticket that includes the app-based audio guide, download it at your hotel before departure. See our audio guide review for setup instructions.
